One of the earliest major achievements of Wu Yize’s career came in 2018, when he won the IBSF World Under-21 Championship at only 14 years old. That success established him as a young player with the potential to compete against much older and more experienced opponents.

Wu Yize Family Background

Wu Yize’s father played an important role in his professional development. His father accompanied him when the young player moved to Sheffield, England, to continue his snooker training and pursue a professional career.

The move involved significant personal sacrifices. After winning the World Championship in 2026, Wu spoke emotionally about his parents and explained that his father had remained beside him after he decided to leave school. He also expressed his appreciation for his mother and described his parents as a major source of strength.

Moving to England for Snooker

Moving from China to Sheffield became a major turning point in Wu Yize’s development. England has a deeply established professional snooker culture, providing access to tournaments, practice facilities and many experienced players.

Wu Yize Education and Career Decision

Wu Yize’s formal education became secondary to his sporting ambitions. After becoming World Champion, he revealed that he had made the decision to leave school while pursuing professional snooker.

He credited his father for remaining beside him during that period. The decision involved a major personal sacrifice, but it ultimately became part of the story behind his rise to the top of professional snooker.

Beginning of Professional Career

Wu Yize became a professional snooker player in 2021. His arrival on the World Snooker Tour came after several years of success in junior and international competition.

His first professional seasons demonstrated that he could compete with established names. Rather than needing many years simply to adapt, Wu quickly began reaching later stages of major tournaments and earning recognition among snooker’s emerging generation.

Wu Yize Rookie of the Year

During his early professional career, Wu produced several notable results. His performances included a quarter-final run at the European Masters and a last-32 appearance at the UK Championship.

Those results helped him receive recognition as the World Snooker Tour’s Rookie of the Year. The award reflected the impact he made during his introduction to professional snooker.

2023 World Championship Breakthrough

Wu Yize reached the Crucible for the first time in 2023 after successfully navigating World Championship qualifying.

He defeated Allan Taylor, Tian Pengfei and Chris Wakelin during qualifying to earn his place in the main event. At the Crucible, he faced Neil Robertson in the first round but lost the match 10–3.

Although the result ended his tournament, reaching the Crucible at such a young age represented an important stage in his development. It gave Wu valuable experience of snooker’s biggest venue and its unique pressure.

2024 Breakthrough Season

The 2024 season became another important step forward for Wu Yize. He reached his first ranking-event final at the English Open.

During the tournament, Wu defeated Judd Trump in the quarter-finals, demonstrating his ability to beat one of the leading players in the sport. He eventually reached the final before losing to Neil Robertson.

Wu then reached another ranking-event final at the Scottish Open. Although he did not win either final, reaching two ranking finals in the same year showed that he had moved from promising young professional to genuine title contender.

First Ranking Title in 2025

Wu Yize secured his first ranking title at the 2025 International Championship in Nanjing.

The final produced another major test because his opponent was four-time World Champion John Higgins. Wu won the match 10–6 and captured his first ranking-event trophy.

The victory was significant for his career because it demonstrated that he could convert strong tournament runs into major silverware. The World Snooker Tour’s official records now list Wu with two ranking titles.

Wu Yize at the 2026 Masters

Wu’s development continued at the 2026 Masters. On his debut at the prestigious invitational tournament, he defeated defending champion Shaun Murphy 6–2.

His run eventually took him to the semi-finals, where his progress was halted. Even so, reaching the latter stages on his Masters debut further established Wu as one of the leading young players in professional snooker.

His performances during the season also helped build momentum before the World Championship.

Historic 2026 World Championship

The biggest moment of Wu Yize’s career arrived at the 2026 World Championship.

Before the tournament, Wu had never won a match at the Crucible. He changed that record in dramatic fashion by defeating Lei Peifan, Mark Selby, Hossein Vafaei and Mark Allen on his route to the final.

His semi-final against Mark Allen was particularly dramatic. Wu eventually won 17–16 in a deciding frame, earning his place in his first World Championship final.
